MICE INVADE WAGGA HOMES – RIVERINA PEST CONTROL

26/06/2014 by admin_apcmedia

Recently we have seen a significant increase of mice activity throughout homes in Wagga Wagga. Although the most recent mouse plague is a few years behind, we are not expecting plagues anytime soon, however the numbers of these winter pests are on the increase.

Why do mice appear in winter?

The reason why we refer to mice as winter pests is because this is the time of year that they are looking to move from outdoor environments such as surrounding farm and bushland and move into a nice warm environment, close to food and water sources such as your home. The average home is a fantastic place for mice or rats to live in during winter.

We attended a property in Tatton and came across a mouse infestation that is very typical of what we see this time of year. In the picture below you can see why a typical Wagga roof void is perfect. Particle insulation is perfect nesting material, mice live to burrow down into this insulation material to make their nests and produce young. You can see, hard against the ceiling joist is a burrow, there is also some droppings nearby on the left. Rodents in the roof can be very problematic. Urine can stain ceilings, rodents need to gnaw constantly and as a result can start fires and there isn’t much food in your roof so they will come into your home in search of food.

Once in your home, not only is there available food and water but there can also be other nesting opportunities also. As you can see, once we moved some stored goods from an area inside we found other areas where they were nesting. Stored items provide an ideal harbourage for these small rodents that are extremely well adapted to exploit such areas.

How do I know if I have a rodent problem?

Many home owners that think they have a mouse problem usually tell the pest manager ‘I’ve a mouse running around’ or ‘I’ve only seen a couple’. The fact is, there is very rarely one or two. You need to remain vigilant and look for the signs.

Look for droppings. Droppings are a good indicator of activity and activity levels. You may not see droppings in areas such as roof voids or in amongst stored items. You will see them in open areas. This particular home even had droppings on a window frame. Look for gnaw marks on food packaging, food containers, conduit and cables. Look for nests that may be hidden in areas of stored goods that are rarely used or moved. Listen at night when things are quiet, you might hear sounds of activity, pets may become excitable for no apparent reason. But most importantly, if you see what you think might be droppings (as pictured above) or actual live mice, call a Professional Pest Manager.

A professional will not just put some bait down and take your money. A professional will assess and inspect to find entry points and advise you of what you need to do to stop them entering. Be fully aware of the size of the problem and activity levels or numbers of mice ensuring that the right products are used in the right places to maximise the speed of control. And most importantly a professional will follow-up. Mice control is not a one visit fix, more than one visit will be required due to their habits. Amalgamated Pest Control will ensure your mice are gone from your property and warrant the service, if they come back, so will we.
Don’t ignore the signs. Not noticing the signs or not acting allows the problem to spiral out of control as mice produce around 6 per litter and are sexually mature in as little as 6 weeks. Which means that the mouse you see today could be dozens in the very near future.

AUTUMN PEST CONTROL RIVERINA

24/04/2014 by admin_apcmedia Leave a Comment

Many Riverina locals ask us, during this time of year if pests will start to disappear now that summers over. Pests will start to reduce in numbers as the weather cools down and the optimal temperatures for maximum breeding and activity have reduced. This however doesn’t mean that your property will be pest free from now until next spring.

Generally temperatures inside homes are much warmer in the cooler months than outside and there is food and water available in and around the home. This being the case what usually tends to happen is many pests will seek out homes for these reasons. Nice warm shelter in which to live and breed, very good accessibility to food sources and access to water is also available.

Common Autumn Pests

The most common pests that will look to move inside are rodents such as rats and mice. The home is an ideal place for these pests. Roof voids can be full of insulation which is an ideal warm nesting material which they can burrow into to make their nests. Many believe that cooler months such as late autumn – winter is rat season. Rats actually breed heavily all year round, the cooler months however they much prefer, as we would, to get inside and out of the cold. Obviously once they are in the roof they can have easy access to your food and garbage. Once inside your property rats and mice can cause a lot of damage. They consistently gnaw; they have too to keep their teeth from growing too long. They’ll gnaw on anything. Many fires are started by rats gnawing on wires. Diseases are another big problem and its not just rats. Mice carry as many diseases as rats and potentially spread very easily.

What other pests are active in autumn?

Cockroaches will still remain a problem especially German Cockroaches. Their environment is your kitchen therefore they will continue to breed just as fast as in summer and due to their rapid lifecycle can become a big problem very quickly. They rely on humans for survival; we provide them with the shelter, food and water that they need. Amalgamated pest control offers 12 months Service Warranty on all species of cockroach including German Cockroaches meaning you never have to deal with these pests again.

How can I reduce autumn pests?

Some of the things that any home owner can do which will help reduce the chance of these and other pests getting into your home this autumn and winter are quite simple:

.    Reduce access to food. All pests need food. Keep food sealed, clean up spills straight away, clean up food crumbs get rid of food scraps into tightly sealed garbage bins and ensure bins, especially outside, don’t let your bin become so full that you can’t close it. Rats have an especially keen sense of smell and will smell garbage from a long way away.

.    Reduce excess water. If you have any leaking plumbing or pooling water around the home have them repaired. Water accumulating in sinks, showers and baths don’t’ help either ensure you wipe them dry. Pests actively seek water for survival.

.    Keep them out. Keeping out some pests can be done. To keep rodents out keep trees close to the home trimmed away from the roof. Make sure your roofing is in good condition, broken tiles and the like can allow rodents to slip in cracks and gain access. Gutters can be protected with a rodent resistant mesh covering. Any gaps/holes in the external wall such as where pipes enter or weep holes are present should be protected also with a rodent resistant material.

Some pests can’t be kept out with physical materials. Cockroaches, ants and spiders will always find a way into just about any home. A professional pest treatment will stop these insects living and breeding in the areas such as roof voids, sub-floors, wall cavities many internal areas of the home and Amalgamated Pest Control will give you a 12 month service warranty on these three pests which allows you too live all year around with no worries.

Still concerned?

Contact Amalgamated Pest Control Riverina for a pest management solution for your property. We are professionals at what we do and can give you the best advice on how to keep the autumn pests and winter pests out of your home and away from your family.

WINTER PESTS – WHY IT’S A GOOD TIME FOR A TIMBER PEST INSPECTION

24/07/2013 by admin_apcmedia Leave a Comment

Subterranean Termites and other timber pests are widespread and very destructive throughout the Riverina and Subterranean termites in particular cause considerable economic damage to homes.

Termite characteristics

Although termite activity does slow during the cooler months, it does not stop! This winter we are experiencing a higher than normal number of calls relating to Subterranean termite activity and damage in homes. This may partly be due to a warmer and wetter winter thus far, but more often than not termites entered the home during summer and have been in the house for many months. Termites can work, eating timber in a house for long periods undetected causing unseen structural damage and only are discovered when it’s too late. Early detection is vital and can save thousands on repairs. The best way to ensure your home is not infested with subterranean termites is a Timber Pest Inspection, carried out by a licensed and fully insured Timber Pest Technician.

What does a Timber Pest Inspection include?

All areas of the house and property are inspected. The house itself , all internal and external walls, roof cavity, subfloor (if present) and any attachments such as garage, pergola, veranda etc. All structures are susceptible to termite attack, so it is important that sheds, fences and other similar structures are inspected.  We do not only inspect for termites, a timber pest inspection includes other wood destroying pests such as borers and wood decay which are also a common occurrence in the Riverina. A detailed written report is provided with the inspection and not only does it include all areas of timber pest activity and damage it contains very important information regarding environmental conditions and  corrections and recommendations for termite management.

How do start to control termites?

Environmental conditions and corrections covers areas of the property that may increase the risk of termites entering or foraging near your home. This may include excessive moisture such as leaking pipes or substandard drainage, trees are a favoured nesting site for termites and may require testing, subfloor ventilation or any timber in contact with the soil. Recommendations for termite management will help reduce the risk of termites gaining entry to your home, for instance the removal of timber or a Timber Pest management system tailored for your property. When conducting timber pest inspections Amalgamated Pest control use a range of specialist equipment including the Termatrac T3i movement and moisture detection device.

How often should I have a timber pest inspection?

Although all houses are recommended to be inspected at least once on an annual basis, it’s important to remember that many new homes require a timber pest inspection every year to maintain their termite barrier warranty. Amalgamated Pest control strive to make it easy for you, and once we have you  in our data base we will remind you when your inspection is due to maintain your Termite Barrier warranty.

Still Concerned?

If you believe or suspect that you have rats or mice, please contact Amalgamated Pest Control Riverina for further advice.

RODENTS SEEK SHELTER IN RIVERINA HOMES

14/06/2013 by admin_apcmedia Leave a Comment

Since our last post, Shaun Coe our local Manager has reported a continued increase in rodent activity.  According to Shaun, the recent spell of very cold weather coupled with above average rainfall in the Riverina area is a contributing factor.

In addition, the recent completion of crop sewing in the region is forcing rodents from their natural habitats into the warmth of homes and businesses. In the past two weeks Shaun has visited many properties in the area and  has seen very heavy infestations in Wagga, Karingal, Griffith and Gundagai.

Do I have a rodent problem?

Some simple tell tale signs of rodent infestation to look for around your property:

  • Sounds – Scratching and shuffling noises in the roof.
  • Droppings – Found in and around the building.
  • Tracks – Run tracks or rub marks, (dark greasy marks), along walls or plumbing pipes.
  • Gnawing – Damage to food packets in the pantry. Additional indicators would be holes in skirting boards or conduits, cables being stripped of insulation or cardboard/paper products being chewed.
  • Visual sightings – Sighting of rodents scurrying around and sighting of rodents nesting material in stored boxes.
  • Excitement of your family pet – If your dog or cat is acting strangely, for example excessive barking in a particular area of your home, they might be trying to tell you something.
  • Sensors / Alarms – being triggered, particularly within 1 or 2 specific areas of the premises, can be an indicator of rodent activity within an area.

How to avoid rodent infestations

There are things you can to discourage these pests such as:

–        Removing those obvious food sources such as pet feeding bowls

–        Ensuring that garbage bags are tightly sealed and stored inside bins and covered

–        Keeping down vegetation, particularly close to buildings

–        Look for obvious entry points into premises (gaps under doors for example) and fixing them

–        Undertake a preventative baiting programme with a reputable pest control company.

RODENTS ARRIVE EARLY IN THE RIVERINA

22/04/2013 by admin_apcmedia Leave a Comment

With the cooler weather now upon us, it’s that time of the year again when those pesky rats and mice start to seek out warmer environments.

In the past few weeks we have attended calls from Wagga Wagga, Mt Austin, Forest Hill, Glenfield Park, Kooringal, Turvey Park and Bourkelands. Further afield we’ve also travelled to Gundagai, Tarcutta, Narrandera, Temora, Albury and West Wyalong responding to businesses and households whose premises are being invaded by these disease ridden vermin.

Rodent Characteristics

Rodents are not only looking for warmth, but also readily available food sources such as pet food, garden vegetation, garbage scraps etc as they move away from their natural habitats in the surrounding farm and bushlands and closer to the residential populations. Rodents can also establish themselves at any home, despite how clean the home may be – they need food, water and shelter just like us.

Do I have a rodent problem?

Some simple tell tale signs of rodent infestation to look for around your property:

  • Sounds – Scratching and shuffling noises in the roof.
  • Droppings – Found in and around the building.

  • Sensors / Alarms – being triggered, particularly within 1 or 2 specific areas of the premises, can be an indicator of rodent activity within an area.

Health Issues and problems

Rats are well known for spreading diseases, here are some of the most well known:

  • Asthma is one of the most common diseases in the home caused by Rodent droppings.
  • Salmonellosis – caused by infection with bacteria called Salmonella.
  • Typhoid – a fever disease caused by the bacteria Salmonella.
  • Hygiene – food contamination risk, stock and product loss.

–        Undertake a preventative baiting programme with a reputable pest control company.

Don’t forget to check out our current Winter Specials to help protect your property and your family this season.

How to treat rodent problems

When all else fails and pest control measures need to be implemented, Amalgamated Pest Control technicians will look at all the available options. The two most effective methods of control of rats and mice are:

Rodent Trapping: Using traps to physically trap and remove rodents.
Chemical Control: Includes a wide range of baiting techniques, most commonly bait blocks used in Tamper Resistant Rodent Stations. These baits are secured inside the station and cannot be removed, making them pet and child friendly. Where needed, tracking powders, gels and other baits may be used as required.

HOW DO SUBTERRANEAN TERMITES ENTER YOUR HOME

02/03/2012 by admin_apcmedia

Termites: What are they, how they enter your home.

Termites are an ancient order of insects whose origins date back more than 100 million years to the Cretaceous period. Although they are commonly called ‘white ants’, the resemblance to ants is superficial and they are more closely related to cockroaches and in fact have been recently included into the cockroach order Blattodea.

Termite Characteristics

Termites can be grouped into three basic categories:

  • Dampwood, these termites generally live in damp rotting logs or rot pockets in dead or living trees.
  • Drywood, these termites obtain water from the wood in which they live and have no contact with the soil, or with any other source of moisture.
  • Subterranean, these termites are generally ground-dwelling or require contact with the soil or some constant source of moisture and are the main threat posed to timber in the built environment, (timber-in-service).

What type of damage can they cause to your home

No matter where you are located in Australia, Subterranean Termites are present in your area. Subterranean termites are responsible for more economic loss each year than all natural disasters combined. There are more than 350 species of termites which have been recorded in this country, about 25 of which achieve economic importance as pests of timber in service.

Where do they live?

Subterranean termites live in colonies, numbering from a few hundred to millions. In each colony there is a division of labour, with several distinct castes, each specailising in particular duty. The worker termites are responsible for the damage to timber caused in their search for food, which consist mainly of cellulose, sugars and starch present in the timber. Subterranean termites generally nest underground in the soil,  build earthen mounds, or nest in the root crowns of trunks or living and dead trees. Having to maintain contact with soil or a reliable water source to obtain sufficient moisture to survive, subterranean termites construct protective mud shelter tubes from their nest to their food source- living trees, seasoned timbers, books, furniture, etc. Consuming the wood from inside out, usually by the time the termites work is visible, the timber is virtually eaten away.

How subterranean termites can enter your home.

  • Constructing mud tubes over concrete piers
  • Constructing tunnels up the centre of wood stumps
  • Constructing mud tubes from the soil to the flooring, often within cavity walls
  • Through hair line cracks which appear in concrete slabs around plumbing and electrical conduits
  • Through service pipes such as telephone, plumbing and electrical
  • Bridging by way of vegetation in contact with the building, through the soil abutting the base of the building, working their way through mortar or timber in soil contact
  • Through colonsing flights, reproductive termites may form nests within or in close proximity to the building

POST-CONSTRUCTION TERMITE PERIMETER TREATMENT

12/12/2011 by admin_apcmedia Leave a Comment

This article describes the methods used by Amalgamated Pest Control (APC), during the installation of a post-construction termite perimeter treatment around a residential property in Caboolture, Brisbane.

Currently, APC only approve termiticide formulations based on four types of active ingredient. These actives being  Bifenthrin, Imidacloprid, Fipronil, and Chlorantranilioprole.

The Termiticide Formulation.

For this treatment, the product of choice was the minimal odour  EnviroMax® Bifenthrin 100EC Termiticide & Insecticide formulation – sourced from Australasian Wholesale Chemical Technologies® Pty Ltd.

The treated property is described as a single story brick veneer home on a concrete slab, with a colour bond roof. The home is situated in a rural setting with landscaped gardens

Treatment Method

Step 1: A thorough timber pest inspection and report was undertaken 2 weeks prior to the EnviroMax® barrier installation. During inspection, no termite activity or associated damage was found, and we recommended that the client undertake the following actions prior to the EnviroMax® perimeter barrier being installed:

1.1 Gardens: We required the gardens to be trimmed back from the house, and some shrubs removed as they were planted too close to the perimeter of the building. This action is required to ensure the chemical barrier is not bridged or breached.

Removal of mulch and foliage from the house’s perimeter.

1.2 Mulch & Rocks: All mulch and rocks were required to be kept 300mm from the perimeter of the structure to ensure the chemical barrier is not bridged or breached.

1.3 Floor & Plumbing plans: The APC technician requested a copy of the floor plan of the structure being treated, to determine that the concrete slab had no joins, and to ensure all external plumbing penetrations could be located prior to treatment.

Step 2: Trenching

2. All air-conditioning units were moved

2.1The soil areas were excavated as per Australian standards and Amalgamated Policy and Procedure requirements.

2.2 All external plumbing penetrations were located and exposed.

2.3 The plumbing penetrations were cleared, then coated and resealed with Term-seal primer and Term-seal multi purpose.

3.1 The trenches were rodded and flooded with termiticide.

3.2 Imported soil was then added to the trenches and further termiticide was applied and mixed with the soil to create a slurry.

4.0 Treatment to concrete areas

In order to form a termiticide chemical barrier beneath the concrete slabs and paths, we needed to undertake concrete drilling. The recommended drill hole spacing is between 150 and 200 mm.

4.1 To enhance chemical-soil distribution we used a lateral dispersion tip on the injector and up to 10L of emulsion per linear meter. To ensure formation of a continuous barrier, holes were drilled no more than 150 mm from walls or expansion joints.

4.3 The concrete drill holes were then capped with mortar

Long-lived protection of vulnerable structures from subterranean termite attack is facilitated by

EnviroMax® Bifenthrin 100EC Termitcide & Insecticide treatments. Perimeter treatment of the soil or fill surrounding properties, isolates the structure from termite galleries, through formation of a chemical barrier which acts as a contact poison, killing and repelling termites that come into contact with the treated area. When the colony realises that workers (the food gatherers) are being destroyed it ceases to send them to that location.

At Amalgamated Pest Control we believe that the key to any treatment program is continued monitoring. At the very least, inspections should be carried out at 12 monthly intervals. Following inspection, we extend our service warranty for a further period on the proviso that our recommendations are adopted.

Mosquito Management for home owners

12/12/2011 by admin_apcmedia Leave a Comment

Mosquito control is an important issue as apart from being generally annoying, mosquitoes can carry debilitating illnesses such as Ross River Fever, Barmah Forest Virus, Murray Valley Encephalitis and Malaria.

There are numerous species of mosquito in Australia, and each has its own characteristics in terms of:

  •  salt or fresh water,
  • geographic distribution,
  • the diseases they can carry

Mosquito control in Queensland is the legislative responsibility of Local Government.

Local Government staff that undertake Mosquito management are well trained and do a fantastic job as they treat numerous locations in pristine salt and fresh water environments with specialized equipment and treatment methods.

The focus of this story is about the home owner and what the home owner needs to be aware of to help reduce the threat of mosquitoes around their property.

Home owners’ can reduce the number of mosquitoes around their property by:

  • screening windows, doors and water tanks.
  • empty all containers around the house that might collect water – pot plant saucers, guttering, tins, tires etc.
  • use a repellent outside especially at dusk.

Amalgamated Pest Control can help in a number of ways by offering the home owner the following services:

Larval Control

This is a  environmentally friendly treatments targeted at larvae in still water areas (e.g. ponds). This treatment affects the growth hormones  of the mosquito larvae . This treatment method is target specific, and will only affect the mosquito larvae.

Or

Residual Barrier Treatment

Those looking for an additional, more-targeted solution to mosquito problems should consider specialised “residual barrier” treatments, which significantly reduces the adult mosquito population and prevents them from lingering around the home for  several weeks.

Despite being predominantly airborne vector pests, mosquitoes die after coming into contact with “residual barriers” treated on the ground and around the home. The specialised residual barrier treatment is applied to areas where mosquitoes land and rest such as amongst leaf litter under trees.

The situation is ideally suited to establish garden areas with significant plant foliage and other exterior structures such as shade cloth, which provide landing and resting areas for adult mosquitoes. Residents notice relief immediately.

The treatment is effective for a number of weeks and relief can be noticed immediately many customers that previously could only enjoy their views from inside, now spend their days and evenings out in their pergolas and gardens where they want to be.

If you are unable to enjoy the great outdoors because you are the target of mosquito or midge bites, give us a call at Amalgamated Pest Control on 1300 858 834

Termite News

14/10/2011 by admin_apcmedia 1 Comment

It’s that time of year again when residents should be on the look out over the next few weeks for the annual termite swarms which are both visually spectacular and a possible indication of an infestation.

Mid-November to mid-December is the peak time for the normally subterranean termites to take flight in order to mate and start new colonies. The swarms can be an impressive event with some resembling a plume of smoke rising from the nest.

The swarms of colonising termites generally take place at dusk when the weather is hot, calm and very humid which can often be before or after summer storm activity.

If you do see a lot of flying insects under these climatic conditions have a good look around the building and yard to see if you can find out where they are coming from as it might mean you have a nest of termites nearby.

If residents do see a swarm of termites coming out of a specific site, we recommend marking the spot and contacting Amalgamated Pest Control.

However, property owners are generally more likely to become aware a swarm has taken place when they find dead winged termites in the windowsills and on the floors which is often a cause for concern

People should not be afraid of the swarming, particularly if you have a regular termite inspection program already in place for your property. If you do not have your property regularly inspected for termites then you should collect several of the dead swarmers in a jar, with a little methylated spirits to preserve them, and call your pest controller to identify them and inspect the property.

Of the millions of winged termites that set out only an occasional pair succeeds in finding a mate and suitable nest site however once established and mature, the Queen termite can produce up to 2000 eggs a day.

These winged termites are all members of the alate caste with each one a potential king or queen of a new colony. The alates generally do not travel far, snapping their wings off once they land before searching out a mate and looking for a nest site.

Alates do not fly strongly, and unless assisted by winds, their dispersal is limited so if you do find a large number of winged termites in and around your property over the next few weeks and you don’t have a termite management program in place, call your qualified Amalgamated Pest Control technician to be on the safe side.
