Redback Spiders are found throughout Australia, and are common in disturbed and urban areas. We were recently called to a home in Wagga, with the home owner expressing concern about spiders in their outdoor living areas, and the risks they posed to their small children.
Upon inspection, our technician discovered a number of Redback spiders under the Otto bins (around the wheels of the bins is a common hiding place), under children’s play equipment and BBQ area to name a few. After also inspecting the roof space and under the house, he found a good amount of Redback spiders in those areas as well. The included photos show some of the spiders he found.
Once all the areas of activity had been discovered. the treatment was focussed on direct application to the actual spiders and their webs, meticulously treating around the outside of the home. Our technician also took care to treat areas where Redback spiders are not necessarily visible, but are known to hide. A thorough treatment of the roof space, wall voids and under the house, and the job was done.
No more Redback spiders during the warranty period for this customer. Guaranteed Gone!
Tips to remove Redbacks from your place
There are a few things you can do around the home to reduce the chance of Redback spiders calling your place home.
- The best thing you can do is obviously have a pest control treatment. Not just for spiders, but for other insect’s including ants, cockroaches, and the like. If there are less insects around, there will be less food around for Redback spiders.
- Reduce clutter in areas like garden sheds, garages and items stored outside the home. Redback spiders love to hide in amongst clutter, not only because it’s protected from predators, but food sources such as insects and small lizards etc. like to hide amongst clutter.
- Check under, in and around your children’s toys and play areas. This won’t keep spiders away, but it will greatly reduce the chance of a bite from this nasty spider. If your children’s toys have been sitting in the yard for a few days, have a quick look under them before they start playing. If possible, don’t leave your children’s toys outside.
- Reduce vegetation close to the structure.
